A successful experiment has taken place to grow food in average 5 gallon buckets.  This is a cheap way to grow almost anything, with low maintenance.  They have even figured out how to use a 55 gallon drum to daisy-chain feed water to a row of buckets.  This system can work anywhere, in backyards, decks, even portable on the bed of a pickup truck for all you nomads.  Take your food with you.  Just load up the buckets and your tribe can move somewhere else to follow the seasons.  Go to better climate in the winter.
